Plan Music Magazine

· Title – Crave/Craze
· Audience – 16 – 25, Females
· Genre – Rock/Soft Rock/Electronic.
· Rival/Fulfill a gap – Rival against Kerrange and Mixmag
· Major – IPC, their magazines are mixed genres and the genres they produce are the ones I want on my magazine.
· Production Values – Inform, up to date.
· Price frequency - £2.10/ monthly
· Mode of address – Lead – friendly
· Main Image – Band on the front cover, 5 girls.
- Appealing? – Brightly coloured – attracts the audience
- Who will you use? – My own band members including myself.
- How will you style them? Some dressed up looking punky, some dressed in brightly coloured clothes. I want them dressed like this so it shows the two sides of the magazine and also making a connection between the two.
What articles will you feature on your contents page? Will it be over 2 pages or 1? Why?
There will be a competition for BlueBanana winning the contester’s a voucher for the shop, offers for the cinema. Album review, latest album, interviews with various bands/artists.
I will use 2 pages so the main front cover image is echoed to the contents page but using a different image than the one on the front. The 1st page of the contents page will have a main image of the featured band, also a column of special features. The 2nd will have other articles such as interviews and offers etc.

· What will your double-page be on? It will be on the featured band, talking about their success and how they all started, where they got their name etc
-Will you use an interview or a prose interview?
Prose interview – more detailed – great for article as their description is in more depth.

Notes on Music Magazines.

· Age – 30 – 40
· Job/income – 25,000+
· Hobbies/interest – In a band
- Photographer

- Appearance – Long, rugged hair

- Unclean look.

5. Appealing – the image is carefree – relaxing
- very masculine – but with the guitar it makes it seem cool
6. Mode of address – informal, telling the audience how to dress.
7. Attitudes towards the reader – Inform.

Front cover – music magazine- Mixmag

1. Who is the target audience? Male and female 18 – 25, people who like to have fun and partying.
2. What is the music genre?
Retro, techno
3. How is the front cover made appealing for the target audience? It’s made appealing by the use of bright colours, the clothes they are wearing, also they are not posed and look like they are naturally having fun. Relating to the audience, loud and in your face.
4. What is the focal point? The focal point is two people dress up yelling at each other.
5. What is the mode of address – how does it’s audience? It’s speaks like a friend towards the audience, yet seems controlling at the same time ‘Party or die’

The music world

1. Establish - what is driven by youth
The hippies started with a rebellion, this started the flower power and long hair, drugs and freedom.
- The emo type of music may have started with the band being really emotional with their music, dark and sinister.

What is driven by institutions?
-Radios played music which was already there – relating to certain music
- Tv’s making music videos’s for the bands.

2.Changes in music consumptions?
-Cassette tapes
Music videos
Radio
Downloading

2. Role of a magazine is?
Magazines usually promote new music CD’s or to download, also to introduce a new artist/band
- they comment on a band’s new song or look
- guide – what to wear and what not to wear, also what you should listen to.
- Share the moment – if something great had happened like a band member is getting married, or if someone has died they talk about the good times such as Michael Jackson.

Task 1 How does music offer a range of identities.
Britney Spears at first represented innocent and sweet young girl – representing girls at a younger age being sweet – had pigtails and wearing uniform. Her image has changed, she has had many break downs, her babies taken away from her, married twice, her image has completely changed to what it was – opposite.

Task 2: How does the representation of gender link to the various genres of music?
In rock music, men are seen as dominating in their videos and women are objects.
In rap the male seem to have all the money, fancy cars and women who will do what they want (sexual objects)
Pop – girls see, plastic and all beautiful, dressed up. Voice is amazing and glamorous.

Task 4 Indie magazines have men on the front cover - dressed in skinny jeans - mid length hair, looks relaxed.

On rap magazines they usually have a man on the cover looking fierce with loads of 'bling' and sometimes a gun in their hand.

Kerrange have male band members, the rock type dressed in all black, black heavy make up, tattoos and ruffled hair - shows males are dominant.

Links to target audience, men look up to them and want to be like them, female audiences want to be with them - mainly because they don't seem weak.

Task 5 Are music magazines a product of hegemony? Hegemony = wants people to follow = wants to be powerful.

- They can be seen as though they want to take over people's lives and that people must rely on them, making them seem as they don’t have a personality and want to make people follow magazines like a religion. Also what ever is in the magazine is correct like a Bible is to a Christian and they follow a certain trend and what not to wear. Magazines overall can be seen as controlling.

Ways to make your magazine different

- Regional most are national – make only in county’s
- Niche genre – imported
- Supplements digital radio – listen to a radio with a specific music and generate from that.
- Subscription
- E – zine
- Existing models – rival – new style – look – new voice

Photoshop – big title main image
IPC – mainstream wide range of music.
1. Core readers
2. secondary readers – family – females
3. Third levels – males

Keywords

- production values – how the company represents itself – formal chatty, in your face, teaches you.
- House style – same layout throughout a magazine.
- Reader profile – who is the reader, who is the target audience
- Mode of address – how does it speak to it’s audience – tone
- Attitude towards the reader? Equal to, speak down to, sarcastic, friendly, lead, inform, educate.
- Attitudes towards content – positive, negative, defend, promote, sell.

Planning music magazine

1. Buy – older people 3 ways of getting a magazine.
2. Subscribe – older people
3. Online – older + younger
Download, SMS, Phone

NME ½ million 1996
30,000 2009
1. Target audience – who is it for.
Circulation and distribution how are they sold? How? Shops, home, gigs.

Frequency – most monthly.
Price – reasonable
Revenue – how much the magazine makes.

Gene Simmons Interview

1. Who is the target audience? Mainly males who love Kiss, and are in their mid 40’s.
2. Article made appealing – Big main picture to catch the attention, his signature look. Pictures at the bottom showing various events he had alone, also showing the time before KISS
3. What sort of language is used to describe Simmons? Quote – Chatty, informative also immature way of talking with a self centered tone. “’Bob Dylan wore white face paint on the Rolling Thunder tour because of KISS ask him’”
4. How is Gene Simmons represented in the article?
He seems big headed about his fame but there is a bit in the article where he talks about his kids not. “The reason both my kids….have never uttered a potty word” He makes himself big and impressive but deep down he’s a caring father.

secondary task researching music magazines

Black velvet is produced from Development Hell and is Independant, it doesn't have to comit itself to the house style that major producers like to stick to, also produces of independent magazine can change the style according to the articles and the main theme of the magazine without being told what to do.
From this magazine i wouldn't use the front cover for any other ideas because it isnt very successful, the title isnt central and very noticable, nothing really stands out as they have only used red, black and white for there main colours. But the font gives it a hand writing effect which gives the impression that it's personal and it doesn't catch your eye which breaks the rule of magazine titles. Also by doing this it shows that this magazine isn't in your face like some magazines. Black velvet isn't in the high streets and is only in certain shops in known towns/ cities. For it to be in certain shops it shows that it's only for a certain type of audience.

I like the layout of NME the focal point is clear, NME contrasts well as it is red and stands out well which clearly shows the audience what they are buying. The picture itself is very encouraging because it isn't in your face and doesn't look down on you, but this contrasts against KILLERS because this gives off an 'in your face' vibe and a feeling of you must buy this magazine. I like the use of simple colours it doesn't look too busy and it's laid out well. I wouldn't use this magazine to give me ideas as this magazine isn't the genre i want to use.

Kerrang is owned by Bauer which is a major producer. The thought behind the name of the magazine is clever because they came up with because when you strum on a guitar open it makes a sound like 'Kerrang', this is great because it links with the audience as they maybe in a band and play guitar, also this magazine could relate to the audience because they may probably be in a band and are inspired by Kerrang and the artists/Bands. But the focal point can sometimes contrast as the people in the picture are smurking which can give an instant 'looking down upon' look. I would use the idea of the title relating to a musical noise, which emphasises which genre it is and what the band/ artist mainly use. Also the font of the title is very eye catching and in your face. and the focal point is emphasised as the title is behind them.

prelimary Task 1

For the first task, we have to make a front cover of a school magazine. My target audience is towards Helenswood School year 10 and 11, I had chosen this audience because girls mainly like to get creative and take part in different activities, such as making cards, cooking etc.

I called it Involved because the magazine is about people getting involved in doing different events, it encourages people to different activities and having fun, it does tell people what’s going on but it’s a twist that you can get involved if you like the event which is taking place.

The magazine is monthly so the front cover is always something to do with what happens that month, such as December will have a snowy, Christmas scene on the cover and there will be events which are to do with Christmas.

<---- Rough drawing of front cover.

My issue will be for October so the front cover is going to be presenting two girls in Halloween costumes eating Halloween sweet etc. I want this type of image on the front so it looks natural and that they are having a fun time and they aren’t just posed in front of a camera. The font of Involved will have cob webs dangling down from some of the letters and the image will be taken in a kitchen to emphasis the feeling that they created something for Halloween and they are doing something for Halloween. I will have the articles to the left side of the page with a few images of what people will be doing.
This is my final piece of my front cover.

Rough draft of contents page.

School magazine research

For this magazine the target audience is for sporty people or for people who idealises them and want to be like them when they are older. Such as the woman on the left would be targetting young atheletics girls and on the right the man would be targetting men or young boys.

The woman on the left is representing young atheletic girls, showing that you can be successful if you try hard. Also for the woman to be smiling, it is very encouraging and makes girls want to be like her even more.

On the right the man is representing men and young boys who are more masculine and are into sports which involves more injuries. He is representing success and how you can become like him if you try hard enough.
The school may be suggesting that the success rate is very high and people achieve their dreams, and by having two successful people on their front cover emphasises successfulness of the pupils.
Both covers are appealing because it's simple but not plain, the font of the title is bold and simple, the colours are eye catching, also the colour of the font looks like gold off of a medal which emphasises their achievements and how great they are at what they do. Also their is little amount of text which makes it less busy and more appealing to the audience. The images are appealing to the audience because on both covers the woman and the man are showing their biceps and muscles, by doing this it shows what you probably have to do to follow in their foot paths and be successful. Also the pictures show them in their enviroment and performing their sports, such as the woman is running and the man is playing rugby, the woman is smiling which makes her seem more approachable and makes you think she loves what she is good at and encourages people to do the same. Both images are focused on them emphasises that the spotlight is on them.
The layout is appealing towards the audience because the man and woman are in the middle and the photo is big which shows that they want them to stand out and they want them to be the main focus with little amount of text to one side of them.
the front cover is successful because they have a secret meaning behind them to encourage younger people to become succesful and to follow them in their paths, the font is eye catching and the colour is relevent to them because of medals or trophies. The images are shot in a good enviroment which shows they are not posers and they are in it tp win which gives a good impression. The front cover shouldn't be improved because it targets the audience perfectly, the layout, images, font etc, are appealing to the targetted audience.

Research and Planning

I am an AS student studying Media Studies, there are three sections to this foundation coursework.

The first section of the coursework is research and planning which involves creating a front cover of a school magazine, either lower school, upper school, Sixth Form or for the parents, this involves producing a front cover and a mock-up contents page.
The second section is construction, which involves creating a music magazine using our own materials and our own photos, including the front cover, double page spread and the contents page. We will be searching different genres of bands and a variety of music magazines.
The third section is evaluation, discussing about the work i have produced and my opinions.

During this coursework the programs i will be using are Photoshop or Idesign, the only fears i have are that because i haven't used photoshop before the quality of my work may not turn out as great as i hope it to turn out.
